Dear Lancer Families,

As we head into the final stretch of the school year, there is so much to celebrate, reflect on, and look forward to. Here is a quick update on what’s happening around our campus.

An Unforgettable Living History Lesson
This past Friday, our school had the absolute honor and privilege of hosting Bettie Mae Fikes, a legendary voice of the Civil Rights Movement.

It is rare to have the opportunity to hear directly from someone who was on the front lines of history, and I hope our students recognize just how special this moment was. I want to give a massive shout-out to our kids: they were absolutely amazing during her speech. The level of respect, attention, and maturity they showed was exemplary. They made Churchill incredibly proud.

Finishing Strong: A Quick Status Check
I might sound like a broken record here, but it’s only because it is so important: please continue to check in on your student's academic status. With the warmer weather and summer quickly edging in, end-of-year fatigue is hitting hard, and some students are starting to treat class attendance as less of a priority.

How you can help: Please encourage your students to push through the finish line and finish strong. If you want the most accurate, up-to-date information on how they are doing, emailing their teachers directly is always your best bet. Let's work together to keep them motivated for these last few weeks!

Save the Date: Jazz Café (June 4th)
Looking for a fantastic night out? I highly encourage all of our families and community members to attend our upcoming Jazz Café on Thursday, June 4th.

This will actually be my very first time attending, but everyone I’ve talked to has raved about it. I’ve been told it is easily one of the absolute best and most beloved events we put on here at Churchill.
  • What to expect: Incredible live music and beautiful art displays.
  • Who is invited: Everyone! Even if you don't have a student performing, please come out to enjoy a wonderful evening and support our talented kids.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Let's make these final weeks count!

Go, Lancers!

💻 Important: Returning District Technology Devices

As we approach the end of the school year, the 4J Technology Department requires certain students to return their district-issued devices (iPads, laptops, etc.). Returning these items helps protect school resources and avoids replacement fees!
  • Who Needs to Return Devices: * All graduating 12th-grade seniors
  • Any non-returning students (moving out of the district)
  • Any student currently using a Macbook Air 7,1 (these models are being decommissioned due to outdated security requirements)
  • Where to Return: Please bring devices and chargers to the Front Office on campus before the last day of school.

🎨 Lancer Spotlight: Exchange Student Wins Art Award!

Congratulations to our exchange student, Iryna, for winning Second Place in a statewide art competition hosted by the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education!

Sponsored by the Kryszek family, the competition required students to research a Jewish individual who settled in Oregon after World War II and create a piece based on their history. Iryna was honored at an award ceremony at the museum. We are so proud of your hard work and creativity, Iryna!

A Message About Our Upcoming Student Survey

Dear Families,

We are reaching out to let you know that we will soon be asking our sophomore and junior students to complete a brief survey about their interest in a potential Honors Program. We want to share the context for this survey so you understand why we are asking these questions and what we hope to learn.

Why We Are Exploring an Honors Program
Our neighboring school districts offer variations of an honors diploma or honors designation that students can earn by meeting certain academic, career, or community engagement standards. These distinctions can benefit students in meaningful ways, including:
  • Increased competitiveness for merit-based scholarships
  • Recognition on transcripts reviewed by colleges and universities
  • Acknowledgment of career and technical skills for workforce entry
  • A sense of accomplishment and motivation to stay engaged through senior year

We want to ensure that our students have access to the same recognition opportunities as students in surrounding districts — and that we build any program in a way that is fair, accessible, and reflective of the many paths our students take after graduation.

What the Survey Asks
The survey asks students about three possible honors pathways we are considering:
  • Academic Achievement — focused on advanced coursework in core subjects
  • Career Technical Education (CTE) — focused on career pathways and hands-on skills
  • Community Service — focused on volunteering and civic engagement

Students will also be asked for their opinions on things like GPA expectations, attendance requirements, the number of additional credits or courses they could realistically take on, and what type of recognition would be most meaningful to them.

What This Survey Is — and Is Not
This survey is the first step in a longer process of listening and planning. No program has been decided upon. Student responses will be reviewed by a committee that will use the findings to develop a proposal. Any new program would go through appropriate review processes before being implemented.

The survey is anonymous and voluntary. Students will not be asked to provide their name, and completing the survey does not obligate them to participate in any program.

Questions? If you have questions about the survey or the Honors Program initiative, please do not hesitate to contact us. We value your partnership and look forward to sharing what we learn from our students.

Sincerely,
The Graduation Rules and Awarding Credit Committee, Eugene School District 4J
