Churchill High School Weekly Newsletter
November 1, 2024
Family Bulletin header with red text, a newspaper titled 'NEWS,' and a pair of black-framed glasses resting on the newspaper.
Churchill Families,
What an exciting and jam-packed week it was to join the Churchill family, starting with the homecoming assembly and football game last Friday. It was fun to once again be part of the energy and excitement that surrounds events like these. The homecoming dance on Saturday packed the quad with music, food, and lights as students danced to tunes being spun by our very own DJ Crews. It was neat to see everyone dressed up and enjoying the evening. Thank you to everyone for making Noche de Familia the best attended yet. Families enjoyed food, music, and festivities aimed to build community and connect folks with resources. Fall Festival was on Thursday, the smell of cotton candy filled the air and screams could be heard coming from the Haunted House.

Congratulations to the volleyball team who wrapped up their season at home on Tuesday, securing a league title and a playoff spot, this Saturday at 4:00.

Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up on the 25th and 26th, be on the lookout for more information about the schedule in the weeks to come.

I have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful staff and students over the past week, Churchill truly is a special place. Thank you for the warm welcome.

Go, Lancers!

Interim Principal

Counselor Corner
Let’s go back in time to October 9, 2024 – this was test day at Churchill. We had 80 seniors taking the first ever “in school” administration of the SAT and 118 juniors taking the PSAT.

The score reports have been released for students that took the test on October 9. Students should check their 4J emails and College Board accounts for score information.

Fast forward to today – college admissions test (SAT/ACT) requirements are determined by each individual college. If you don’t know if it’s required – make sure to ask! You can contact each school Admissions Department or come to the Student Support Center and ask Mary Beth or your counselor. You can read more about the SAT at: www.collegeboard.com or the ACT at www.act.org

Seniors - as we enter college application season, remember to request transcripts through Naviance. You can read about this in the College and Career section of the Churchill website.

Food Pantry - We have a terrific resource at Churchill. It is open every Wednesday from 3:00-4:00 at the CHS Cafeteria. Feel free to contact your student’s counselor for more information.

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, November 14, 2024
At age six, Ruby Bridges became the first African American to integrate an elementary school in the South and she has been a lifelong civil rights leader. This event is the perfect opportunity to teach children about the civil rights movement and to make connections to today’s collective efforts for change.

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day encourages a culture of active transportation and gives our students the chance to celebrate Ruby’s courage by walking, biking, or rolling to school.

Become a Churchill Community Responder
A Churchill Community Responder is a volunteer that responds to “alerts” sent by the 15th Night Coordinator for needs specific to CHS students that have not been met by internal school resources. Types of alerts would be for items such as clothing, shoes, small household items, food or bedding, small gift cards, etc.

A Churchill Community Responder would receive a text message indicating a need. If the Responder can provide the need, they respond to the text message and work with the CHS Coordinator to secure and deliver the item. If you are unable to help with that alert you simply ignore the alert.

4J Student Cards for Eugene Public Library
All Eugene School District 4J students receive their own Eugene Public Library (EPL) card as part of a partnership with Eugene Public Library! Library cards were delivered to all 4J students last year and will be automatically renewed yearly until they graduate or leave the district.

New library cards are being offered to all new students and kindergarteners this year. If your student does not receive a card once your home school has delivered library cards, please contact or visit Eugene Public Library.

Student cards:
  • Provide immediate access to Eugene Public Library's online resources and the ability to borrow five physical items at a time.
  • Will be distributed by each school's library or administration office.
  • Are free of charge, including for students who live outside the City of Eugene.
  • Can be upgraded to a standard library card with higher borrowing limits at no charge.
  • Are automatically issued to all K-12 students enrolled at 4J neighborhood and alternative schools unless they or their parents choose not to participate. Charter schools are not included.
  • Are automatically renewed each school year for continuing 4J students. New cards will be issued to students joining the district (kindergarteners and new students).
The initial account password is the student’s 4J ID number. We encourage patrons to change their password upon first logging into their account. Teachers, 4J librarians, and school secretaries can assist with ID numbers as needed.

4J students who already have a standard Eugene Public Library card may choose to keep and use both cards or cancel one of their cards.

We appreciate your patience as cards are distributed. Should you have questions about getting a Student Card, please contact your school's administration office.

For questions about using, upgrading, or canceling a Student Card account, please contact Eugene Public Library online, in person, or by phone at 541-682-5450. EPL’s website posting
