Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month! For Native people, connection to the land is integral to culture and tradition. There are around 326 tribal land areas in the United States, compared to 574 federally-recognized tribes. Of the tribes that do have land, it is on average only about 2.6 percent as large as the territory they occupied before colonization. Many of the tribes who were forcibly relocated by the U.S. government were left without any land of their own. Here, in Oregon, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde are reclaiming traditional lands near Willamette Falls in Oregon City. Their ancestors were forced to leave this area after signing the Willamette Valley Treaty of 1855, but now, a new generation is tearing down the industrial buildings that stand on former tribal villages and looking to a future where Willamette Falls is once again accessible and central to their traditional way of life.

Volunteer Opportunity

Attention all students: We need student volunteers during parent-teacher conferences next week on Monday, November 20, and Tuesday, November 21 to help in the child-care room and as greeters. This is a no-school day for students. If you are interested please go see Lynne in the IHS office to sign up for a time. We really appreciate your help.
