Family Bulletin, December 9, 2022
Hello, Churchill families and students;
The first week of second trimester is done, and hopefully student and teachers are settling into classes and their routines again. Some student schedules might still shift a little as counselors finalize the last few schedule change requests, but for the most part the dust has settled and students should be in the right classes for the the next 12 weeks. If you have any questions or concerns, please email your student’s counselor.
We are also into the start of winter athletics! Basketball, wrestling and swimming are in full affect. Our student-athletes are performing well on the court, on the mat and in the pool. Check out our new CHS Athletic website (information and link below) for when games and meets will be held. Come on out and cheer each of our teams on! They are exciting, and I always love watching our fans and student-athletes perform and cheer each other on.
As we head into our final week before Winter Break, students and staff will have the opportunity to participate in our annual Winter Spirit week. Each day there are dress-up themes and lunch time activities for all to do. (See themes and activities in the Calendar section at the end of the newsletter). It’s always a great week to see the creativity of adults and students come out. We will share pictures next week!
Have a great weekend. Go, Lancers!

We need your feedback: Parent survey
We want to hear from you!! This year, Churchill High School is going through its 4-year cycle to renew our accreditation. Part of this process is to get parent feedback about how you think we are doing as a high school. Questions on the survey range from teaching and learning, to school leadership, resources, and ways we can improve.
Please share your feedback with us. The survey will be open until Dec. 14th. Here is the link:
Teacher/Staff Holiday Lunch Thursday, December 15

Please drop off warm or crock pot items to the front office by 11:15 Thursday the 15th.

Sign up for ASVAB Testing
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) will be given to interested high school students who are at least 16 years old. The test is on Wednesday, February 15th, 2022. 1:00–3:30 pm. Registered students will be excused from class with a permission slip. Students will need to bring their student computer to take the test. I recommend that students taking the test have taken math at least through Algebra II, but it is not required. New CHS Athletic Website
We are excited to announce our new athletics website, www.chslancers.com. This site will be home to articles about, photos of, and information for all of our Churchill teams. In addition, each team will have pages to showcase their schedule (complete with game results) and roster. Start visiting now to get yourself acclimated to the site!
In addition, go ahead and get signed up for Alerts for your child’s’ team(s). This will allow you to receive the latest updates about changing practice times, game locations, and other important information. (find the “Sing up for Alerts” button at the top of the page in the menu bar)
We hope to see your support, both in person and online, for our Lancers.
Schedule Shift for Fridays Starting 2nd Trimester
Just a reminder that we add 5 minutes to the Friday break schedule. This change will be in effect at the start of the second trimester. Attached is the agreed-upon schedule that each high school will have. We have also added a 1-minute “get to class” bell before second and fifth periods to help students get to class on time. We will continue to have the 5-minute “get to class” bells before school, during the daily 15-minute break, and at the end of lunch. Admin and Campus Monitors will be around to encourage students to get to class on time.
Pre-College Mentors at CHS
We are fortunate to have SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) pre-college mentors on our campus. They can help students research colleges and scholarships, fill out applications, answer questions about what college is like, register for standardized tests, and much more. They will be located in the College & Career Center. Students can see them on a drop-in basis (schedule below) or arrange to have a set time to meet with them regularly.
- Monday: 10:30 am–3:30 pm
- Tuesday: 11:00 am–3:30 pm
- Wednesday: 8:00 am–3:30 pm
- Thursday: 9:00 am–3:30 pm
We hope students will take advantage of this amazing and valuable opportunity.
SENIOR FAMILIES
With Winter Break right around the corner, there are some things senior families should keep in mind.
If a student requires a letter of recommendation or transcript to meet a college admissions deadline in January, they need to request them now!
Letters of Recommendation
We ask that you give the recommender a minimum of two weeks to write thoughtful comments!
You will find the instructions to request a letter of recommendation HERE
Transcript Requests
If you need them (a lot of colleges do not want them) transcripts requests can take time! Request yours now to ensure they are processed in time.
Financial Aid Reminders
Senior families;
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Oregon Student Aid Application (ORSAA) are available online. The FAFSA and ORSAA are forms that seniors fill out to apply for money for college. Apply early as some funds are limited. You will fill out the FAFSA OR the ORSAA.
- FAFSA applications begin here:
- ORSAA applications begin here:
Not sure which to apply for? Follow this link for more info:
Check out our step-by-step guide to completing the FAFSA:
The Oregon Promise Application is now open. The Oregon Promise is funding from the State of Oregon that helps students pay tuition at any Oregon Community College. The application is not long or time-consuming, although students must fill out the FAFSA or ORSAA to be considered. We recommend that students fill out the Oregon Promise application even if going to a community college is not their first choice. We don’t want you to miss deadlines! The College and Career Center needs volunteers like you!
Volunteers are needed for the College and Career Center. If you have a spare hour or two a week to help us, consider joining our team. Do you just love managing data and spreadsheets? We need you. Are crafts your thing? We need you too. Are you good at coordinating programs and reaching out to community members? We need a community service coordinator. Does writing make you smile? We need someone to write posts for social media, announcements, emails, etc. Need a flexible schedule? Some tasks can be done entirely remotely. But, if you want to immerse yourself in our active campus, you are welcome. Would you rather help us on an as-need basis? Yep, we always need extra hands.
If you are interested please contact Sheree Houck at houck_s@4j.lane.edu and fill out the volunteer form if you have not done so within the last two years, https://apps.raptortech.com/Apply/Mzg4ODplbi1VUw==

Virtual Movie Screening of “The Upstanders”
Virtual screenings will be available from December 5th thru December 12th.
The movie, “The Upstanders” is unsettling and uplifting, causing us all to examine our behavior, inspiring us to do better, be better, and stand up against victimization and cyber-bullying. 4J Families can view The Upstanders virtually between December 5th at 8 AM PST and December 12th at 8:30 PM. The link for viewing will be sent to all families via email.
In partnership with 4J Prevention Services, there will also be a community screening on December 9th from 6-7 pm with a debrief following immediately after, from 7-8 pm at the Campbell Community Center.
The Upstanders delves deep into cyber-bullying, showing the perspectives of those who bully, their victims, and the trauma of the bystander. Woven through this film is the very personal, first-hand account of a family’s tragic loss that inspired new legislation to turn the tide against this very real epidemic. True stories are featured alongside the latest scientific and medical research and strategies to empower all communities to stand up against bullying.
The 56-minute film features in-depth interviews with kids, families who have lost their children to cyber-bullying-related suicide, and the very best experts in the world from prestigious institutions including Stanford University and Child Mind Institute in NYC. The Upstanders also includes two members of Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour: Jesse Israel of The Big Quiet, Radha Agrawal of Daybreaker, and author of Belong.
Covid-19 has only acerbated this problem of cyber abuse, by providing a bully-ripe environment of isolation, anxiety, and increased time on screens. Most often driven by pain, bullies are searching for that jolt of power when putting someone else down – and there is plenty of pain going around now.
- Through its experts, the film explores
- The science behind cyber-bullying
- Why kids are afraid to admit they are cyber-bullied and what signs to watch for
- Best ways to support your cyber-bullied child
- How to realize if you are harboring a cyber-bully
- How the community can show resilience and power to end bullying
