School and Student Information
PreACT for all 10th graders later this month
Churchill High School, as well as other high schools within 4j, will be offering the PreACT assessment for all 10th graders later this month. This assessment will replace the PSAT that next year’s 10th graders will take in the Fall.
If you would like your student to take the PreACT test during the school day, please fill out the Google Form at the link here: –
Please have this form filled out by Monday, March 6, 2023, if you would like your student to participate in the PreACT assessment.

Taking Care of School Laptops
Prevent screen cracking
Cracked screens are the #1 student laptop repair in 4J. If the screen on your student computer cracks or breaks, visit Jake in the technology office right away. You will receive a loaner device while the computer is sent out for repair.
To help prevent the screen from breaking follow these tips:
- Close the lid on the laptop when you are not using it.
- Do not grab the laptop by the screen.
- Store the laptop on a flat, stable surface.
- Do not leave the laptop unattended.
- Never place the laptop on the floor where it might be stepped on.
- In your backpack, the laptop is safest when it is cushioned between two flat, rigid items that are larger than the screen (like large textbooks or a binder with a smooth surface). You can also use a laptop sleeve to help cushion the laptop from the pointy corners of books and other smaller items that may cause pressure points from the outside of the screen.
Bonus tip: Keep the laptop away from magnets! A magnet can erase data from a computer’s hard drive.

Get a jump start on your education by taking one course at Lane Community College at a discounted price! Lane will give you tuition money for one course. Fees are not included. For a 4-credit course, that’s at least 70% savings!
Eligibility Requirements
- Register for one course during one of the terms (spring or summer) before the published term refund deadline
- You are graduating from an Oregon high school or Oregon GED program in 2023 or 2024

Design Arts Internships
Spring Apprenticeship
The design arts apprenticeship program offers Lane County middle and high school students apprenticeship opportunities in graphic, digital, and physical design. Students pair with a professional designer, working alongside their mentor to understand the profession, explore specific ways to approach design, and begin creating on their own. In addition to learning a creative practice, students also explore the business aspects of a creative career, bolstering college and career readiness regardless of their chosen field.

The application for our PAID summer internship program is open through Monday, March 30th at 5:00 pm! Applications require one letter of recommendation. Those selected to move forward will participate in one interview before final interns are chosen. Youth Trades Academy for Juniors & Seniors!
Are you interested in the building trades like carpentry, sheet metal work, and electrical work? Then check out the Youth Trades Academy beginning in March at LCC and area trade training facilities. The academy is a program designed to give Juniors and Seniors a basic introduction to the technical and professional skills needed to succeed in an apprenticeship or pursue employment in the building trades. Pre-College Mentors from the SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) program at UO on our campus!
We are again fortunate to have Pre-College Mentors from the SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) program at UO on our campus. Mentors can work with students in all grades to help them research, explore and plan for life after high school. Mentors help seniors with college, scholarship, and financial aid applications, essay writing, and navigating the system to prepare for their Freshman year in college. Mentors are located in the College & Career Center on a drop-in basis or by appointment. Mentors are available M-F during the following hours:
- Monday — 9:00 am–3:30 pm
- Tuesday —8:30 am–3:30 pm
- Wednesday — 8:30 am–3:30 pm
- Thursday — 8:30 am–3:30 pm
- Friday — 8:15am–10:00am

2023 Graduation Party
Only 3 months until graduation! The grad committee is hard at work gathering prizes and donations to make this event spectacular! Tickets will be going on sale next week so keep an eye out for updates. The Eugene 4J School District invites students and families to a Neurodiversity Festival on Wed., March 15 from 6-8:30 pm in the cafeteria at South Eugene High School, located at 400 E. 19th Avenue. The event will welcome everyone, with fun activities, prizes, art, food, and entertainment. Come celebrate Neurodiversity Week and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and see the wonderful gifts and strengths that all people contribute to our community. Wordcrafters offers engaging, robust writing education for youth in Lane County — most of which is free, by donation, or offers scholarships.
Our youth programs include:

- Write Club — monthly workshops for youth writers age 9+ on topics such as flash fiction, map making, writing about your life, and poetry

Do you or your child want to learn how to ride a bike? We’ll start with balancing and gliding without pedals or training wheels. Some will learn to pedal in one session, while others may need more practice to reach that final goal.
Join Willamalane; 4J, Bethel, and Springfield Safe Routes to School programs; the City of Eugene; the City of Springfield; and Shift Community Cycles for this fun event with pedal-powered smoothies, bike checks, information about bike share, and workshops for families and individuals of all ages on biking for transportation.

High School Summer Exchange Opportunity
Many students hope for a chance to travel and experience the world. Since 2002 (excluding the past 3 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and travel precautions) area high school students have traveled to Jinju, South Korea as Youth Ambassadors to Eugene’s Sister City. Korea combines ultramodern bustle with ancient traditions of great beauty and peace. It is one of the most wired countries in the world, home of K-pop music, and Oregon’s 5th largest trading partner. Youth ambassadors enjoy two weeks in Korea where they develop strong bonds with their host brothers and sisters, represent Mayor Lucy Vinis to Jinju’s city officials, have fun day and night activities, learn traditional dance and martial arts moves, as well as visit castles and temples. After returning home, they unpack and get ready to welcome Jinju’s Youth Ambassadors for their activities in Eugene. In past years we have sent high school youth from Willamette, Sheldon, South Eugene, Springfield, A3, and Marist High Schools.
Come to Hilyard Community Center Tues., Feb. 28th from 6:00-8:00 PM to hear our program leaders and a few former youth delegate travelers tell about the planning and travel experience. A light casual cultural dinner will be provided free of charge.
- Dates of the exchange: Approximately July 21-Aug. 3, 2023 Eugene students in Jinju and Aug. 3-17, 2023 Jinju students in Eugene.
- Cost: Airfare (approximately $2,100.), host gifts, and spending money.
- Perks: Community Service Credits
- Hosting: Ideally, families of Eugene’s Youth Ambassadors host Jinju’s Youth Ambassadors for 1.5 weeks, but this is not mandatory. Stipends may be available to help with the costs of hosting.
