Churchill Families,
This past week we hosted our second annual Unified Basketball game. Churchill’s unified team hosted Sheldon’s unified team, and it was a packed gym full of fun, cheering on of peers, smiles, high fives and some great basketball too. Each team consisted of athletes (students experiencing intellectual and developmental disabilities) and partners (general education / neurotypical students), to create an amazing inclusion opportunity for ALL learners. Churchill and Sheldon’s Unified Athletes truely shined! (See Churchill’s Team below!) For more information about Special Olympics Unified Sports, check you the link here.
Over the past two weeks we have also been forecasting for classes next year. With the swicth to semester, students were able to choose more classes and also have ampule opportunities to be a part of our wonderful CTE pathways and performing arts programs. Counselors are cleaning up the forecasting requests, and we callling in any student who does not have a completed request list. If you have any questions about your student’s request, pleaes contact their school counselor.
Finally, this week we wrapped up the first half of the third trimester. Hard to believe that we have only 6 weeks left of the school year! It is now that time of year where we start to “sprint to the finishline in the marathon we call the school year.” I encourage you to keep checking-in with your student about their grades, assignments, attendnace (especially our seniors with senioritis…), and make sure they are staying on top of things. Mid-term grades will be sent home in the next week and a half, so check the mail for those! Also, if you have any questions about your student’s grades or classes, please reach out to their teachers, they are always willing to help.

Taking Care of School Laptops
Only put laptops in the laptop sleeves
Please don’t put anything except the laptop in the laptop sleeves. We’ve noticed students using the outside pocket of the laptop sleeves to store their chargers. This causes the charger to press against the laptop and crack the screen. We suggest storing your charger in a separate pocket on your backpack.

Pre-College Mentors from the SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) program at UO on our campus!
We are again fortunate to have Pre-College Mentors from the SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) program at UO on our campus. Mentors can work with students in all grades to help them research, explore and plan for life after high school. Mentors help seniors with college, scholarship, and financial aid applications, essay writing, and navigating the system to prepare for their Freshman year in college. Mentors are located in the College & Career Center on a drop-in basis or by appointment. Mentors are available M-F during the following hours:
- Monday — 9:00 am–3:30 pm
- Tuesday —8:30 am–3:30 pm
- Wednesday — 8:30 am–3:30 pm
- Thursday — 8:30 am–3:30 pm
- Friday — 8:15am–10:00am

In May, we will be selling Mother’s Day 12” Hanging Flower Baskets. More information is forthcoming about that event. Preorder sales and on-site sales will be available.

Summer Learning for rising Grades 1-8
Job Description
- A teaching intern provides support to a lead teacher in charge of a classroom. Also known as teacher’s aides, these individuals reinforce lessons by tutoring individual students or small groups.
- Typical duties include:
- helping students with their learning, often with a particular focus on math, reading, and writing
- supervising group activities
- setting up equipment for lessons and keeping classrooms safe and tidy
- motivating and encouraging students
- helping with school events and activities.

Volunteer for Free Bikes for Kids
We recently collected 400 bikes from the community and at the moment we are in need of folks to help clean and fix them in preparation for our Giveaway Day, where we match the bikes with kids. There is no experience necessary to volunteer. We are running 4 refurbishment sessions a week (3 weekday evenings, and on Saturday mornings as well). This would be a great opportunity for students looking to get involved in their community, and our volunteers have lots of fun while working to help a great cause.

Yellow Jacket Traps
Every summer yellow jackets become a safety issue for 4J students, staff, and community members; requiring hazardous nest removal, extensive labor, and occasional pesticide treatments. As a preventative measure, Facilities sets non-toxic pheromone yellow jacket traps around school grounds in early spring to reduce the number of nests that are established.
Though these traps are intrinsically safe for staff, students, and beneficial pollinators, they are considered a pesticide by ODA and we are required to send out notifications just as with other pesticide applications. All school sites are part of this program.

Move EUG Community Planning Project
The City of Eugene Transportation Planning Team wants to hear from you! Do you walk, bike, or take the bus to get around? Do you have safety concerns when walking, biking, or driving a car? If so, visit the Move EUG Engage Eugene page to share your transportation project ideas via an interactive map, and take a survey about your experiences while walking and biking in town. Fire Camp
Fire Camp is for any female-identifying youth that is between 15 and 19 years old and is June 26–30, 2023. All applications must be submitted by May 19th, 2023.
This unique camp instills self-confidence, teamwork, and leadership by utilizing fire service activities as a catalyst for this growth. Our curriculum is dynamic and physically challenging, but exceptionally rewarding for participants. During the camp, you will be issued firefighting gear and participate in activities related to the fire service, emergency medical services, and other fields.

The Youth Discovery Project is a weekly afterschool program on Tuesdays, 4–6 pm, for ages 13–17. Wordcrafters offers engaging, robust writing education for youth in Lane County — most of which is free, by donation, or offers scholarships.
Our youth programs include:
- Rainbow Reads — a monthly LGBTQIA+ teen book club
- Write Club — monthly workshops for youth writers age 9+ on topics such as flash fiction, map making, writing about your life, and poetry
