Welcome to the 2023 – 2024 school year!

In this back-to-school issue of the G’Lancer, we hope to give you information and resources to help you start the year off well. One of our top priorities is to communicate what is going on here at CHS, as well as what is happening in our community.   As we get closer to the start of school, look for more information on our school website, and also look for a postcard in the mail with additional information.  We are so excited to be back together soon, and look forward to an amazing year!

FYI – Save the date!  Monday, August 21 and Tuesday, August 22 are our Back-to-School Days. All students need to attend. You can choose the date that works best for you. Watch your mailbox and check back at chs.4j.lane.edu for more information coming soon.

Summer Office Hours

Monday–Thursday,

Student Computer Upgrade: Action Required

All returning students must upgrade their student computers to the latest version of the operating system before the start of the school year. This upgrade is not optional. Please take some time this week to upgrade your student computer.

Follow these instructions carefully: Quicksheet – Upgrade macOS 2023

This is a big upgrade that may take the computer several hours to complete. Do not attempt to complete this update using a cellular signal or hotspot. Make sure your computer is in a safe place where it can remain plugged in and will not be disturbed during the upgrade.

If you are unable to complete the upgrade at home, please exchange your student computer at Back-to-School Days on August 21 and 22. 

New students will check out an updated student computer at Back-to-School Days. They will not have to perform this update.
 

Project Hope Back-to-School Giveaway

The Project Hope Back to School Giveaway is an annual tradition. Local organizations pool their resources to provide backpacks filled with school supplies along with shoes and back-to-school haircuts. There are also games and fun activities to make the day a celebration.

The Project Hope Back-to-School Giveaway is on Sunday, August 27, 1:00 pm– 4:00 pm. Tickets are limited. Set a reminder: tickets become available on Friday, August 18 online. (Click the link below for your school area to get your ticket.)

Volunteer for Back-to-School Days!

We need volunteers to make our Back-to-School Days run smoothly for our families. Back-to-School Days are August 21 and 22. Volunteers can commit to one or both days and must be available from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm on the day that they volunteer.

Complete your Volunteer Application as soon as possible. It takes two weeks or more to process your application. Then, email Jill Reents at reents_ji@4j.lane.edu to let her know that you are ready to volunteer.

More volunteer opportunities are available throughout the school. We can use your skills.

All volunteers must complete the 4J Volunteer Application. Volunteer background checks expire after 2 years and each volunteer must complete the application again to renew their background check at the end of the 2 years. Only current registered and trained volunteers may be on campus or chaperone a school function without a staff escort.

Athletics Registration: Due Tuesday, August 8

Register now for fall athletics. Registration is due on Tuesday, August 8. Registrations received after the 8th will not be processed in time to be eligible for the first day of practice on Monday, August 14.

Sports Physicals

Now is the time to schedule your sports physical. Sports physicals are valid for two years from the date of the medical visit.

Most family physicians provide sports physicals at a reduced cost to established patients. Contact your doctor’s office to find out what they offer and schedule your appointment.

The School-Based Health Center at Churchill offers a sports physical as part of a complete child wellness exam. The Health Center is closed through August 14. The Health Center accepts insurance and offers need-based financial assistance. Call for pricing and scheduling.

Back-to-School Days: August 21 and 22

Churchill’s Back-to-School Days are August 21 and 22, 9:00 am – noon. The school will close at noon on both days.

All students must attend Back-to-School Days. Students will receive their student ID cards, update their contact information, receive LTD bus passes, learn about extracurricular activities, and more.

CHS Thespians Information Night: August 29

We are excited to announce an informational meeting for CHS Thespians’ 2023-2024 Season!

Tuesday, August 29 at 6:30 PM in the CHS Auditorium.

We will be discussing the season schedule, play and musical selections, information on regionals and the state festival, fundraisers we will be doing this year, and opportunities for family volunteering and involvement.

It’s going to be an exciting year. We hope to see you there!
 

9th-Grade Orientation is Mandatory: Wednesday, September 6

• 9th-graders, get ready for 9th-Grade Orientation on Wednesday, September 6. You’ll receive a reminder with more information about a week before the orientation day.  Come and see the school, tour your classes, meet new and old friends, and get to know our wonderful staff here at CHS!
   

New-Student Tours: September 6

• School tours will be offered on Wednesday, September 6 at 10:00 am or 2:00 pm for any new student, grades 10th – 12th to CHS.  No RSVP is necessary.  Just show up at the time that works best for you.
   

First Day of School grades 10-12: Thursday, September 7

• Look for an announcement on the CHS website and in your 4J student email the week before school starts with more information about what to expect on the first day of school.

School Supplies

Because of the diversity of classes offered at the high school level, each student will have different needs for school supplies. Teachers will list any special supplies on the class syllabus, which will be shared during the first week of classes. We recommend bringing these basic supplies on the first day of school.

• Your student computer
• Notebook
• Pencils/pens
• Water bottle — Liquid spills may damage your student computer beyond repair! Please keep your water bottle away from your student computer. Do not put your computer and water bottle together in the same pocket in your school bag. Make sure your water bottle is securely sealed. We recommend carrying your water bottle separately or using a schoolbag with an exterior pocket that can hold your water bottle upright and separate from your student computer.
   

Churchill News and Communications

Every official Churchill announcement, newsletter, and social media post will be published in the newsfeed on our website at chs.4j.lane.edu.

• Principal Missy Cole will publish weekly Family Bulletins with information about the upcoming week’s events and important announcements. These bulletins will often also include community events, helpful community services, extracurricular educational opportunities, and celebrations of the accomplishments of our students and staff.
• We use SchoolMessenger to send reminders and time-sensitive announcements to families as recorded voice messages, emails, and text (SMS) messages. These messages can be very frequent at the beginning of the school year when a lot of important events take place. To control how you receive messages through SchoolMessenger, create a SchoolMessenger account at go.schoolmessenger.com using the email address that we use to contact you. With an account, you can control how you receive messages through SchoolMessenger, such as opting out of phone messages or opting into SMS (text). All general messages will also be posted on the Churchill website.
• Occasionally, we will post announcements on our social media pages. In addition to our official school pages, some of our clubs, departments, and teachers manage their own social media accounts. The creator of the account, teacher, or club advisor is responsible for the content on those pages.

HOOTS Summer Hours

We are excited to share a mental health resource that will support 4J students over the summer! Beginning July 10^th through August 11^th the HOOTS Crisis Clinics will run three days a week! We will be at South every Tuesday, Churchill every Wednesday, and Sheldon every Thursday. Each clinic will run from 10 AM – 2 PM.

The HOOTS program, an offshoot program from White Bird’s CAHOOTS, will continue our services during 4J Summer Intensives. The clinic contains a crisis worker and an EMT, our services are HIPAA compliant, and we can provide short-term counseling, crisis intervention, basic first aid, and community referrals. We are in schools to provide extra support to students who are experiencing anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, difficulty meeting their basic needs, issues at school, at home, with friends or with family…and so much more! The clinic can connect students to services in the community, long-term counseling, and even get them signed up for OHP on site.

Anyone can access the clinic and students can sign up by doing the following:

1. Students enrolled in 4J Summer Intensives can self-refer or get referred by a friend, teacher, counselor, parent, or school administrator here. As always, please consider referring students who are struggling to us!
2. Students who are not enrolled in 4J Summer Intensives but are 4J students and need support over the summer can book appointments here. It is important to us to continue serving youth over the summer!

Adolescent & Family Services (AFS)

The Adolescent & Family Services (AFS) Program will continue supporting 4J youth throughout Summer Break. Our counselors have flexible availability and can meet with students on school campuses, at our clinic downtown, and via Zoom. 

Please don’t hesitate to contact us directly or CLICK HERE to refer students to the AFS Program. (Students can self-refer.)

In addition to serving teenagers with substance use challenges, we have expanded our scope to provide broader mental health support. Our work has only been possible with the enthusiastic collaboration and support of 4J staff. We look forward to exploring what more we can accomplish as a team next year!
