Another wonderful week here at Churchill High School! We had an amazing MLK assembly, students and staff are back in the routine of school since Winter break, and student are working diligently on their classwork. Churchill really is a great place to be!
As we get closer to mid-terms for trimester 2, I encourage you and your students to reach out to their teachers to check on grades, assignments and ways to either continue to work hard, or ways to get caught up. Teachers are always just an email or phone call away.

Staff Appreciation, February 2
CHS Parents and Guardians:
We are planning a little fun for the staff on Thursday, February 2nd! Please sign up to bring something! This will be a drinks and sweets theme for an early Valentine’s Day. Looking to provide fun coffee creamers and add-ins as well as hot chocolate and some sweet treats (like cookies, muffins, fruit, chocolate…) for everyone! Items can be dropped off in the office Wednesday, February 1st, or Thursday morning for them to be available all day on Thursday! Just have it marked for staff appreciation and let them know when you bring it what it’s for.

Taking Care of School Laptops
The 4J Technology Department is reporting a significant amount of preventable damage to student laptops. We’d like to remind everyone of the importance of taking good care of these devices. The money that we save on repairing or replacing student technology can be used to better serve our students and school communities.
Winter Formal is Back!
Winter Formal is happening Saturday, February 11th from 7:30-10:00 pm. at Churchill High School. The theme for the event is Cupid’s Masquerade. Students are invited and encouraged to attend, however no outside guests will be permitted. Tickets will be sold during lunch at the planters from Monday, 1/30/23 to Wednesday, 2/8/23. Tickets will also be sold at the door. Ticket prices are $6 with ASB card, $8 without ASB card, or $10 at the door.
Winter Formal Chaperones Needed
We are excited to host a Winter Formal dance on Saturday, February from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at Churchill High School. We need chaperones to help make this event a success! If you are interested in chaperoning, please email Elizabeth Henderson at henderson_e@4j.lane.edu.

Valentine’s Week Spirit Week
Student Leadership has planned a fun week for students for the week of Valentine’s Day. In addition to a spirit week, there will be fun activities for students happening during lunch at the planters. The themes for the spirit week are:

School Choice
It’s School Choice Time
See what our schools offer!
In Eugene School District 4J, every school offers an excellent education for our students. Students may enroll in their neighborhood school at any time, or may request to enroll in a different 4J school provided there is space available. School choice requests will be accepted in an order determined by lottery.
To be included in the lottery, 4J residents must apply by January 31 at midnight. Non-district residents must apply between March 1 and 31. All students who want to obtain a transfer must apply, including new incoming siblings and students who have moved out of our school neighborhood or the district and want to remain enrolled next year.
Virtual and in-person school visits are scheduled in the month of January. If you have any friends or family members who are considering school choice, please invite them to learn more about our wonderful school and their school choice options!

En el Distrito Escolar de Eugene 4J, cada escuela ofrece una excelente educación para nuestros alumnos. Los alumnos pueden matricularse en la escuela de su vecindario en cualquier momento, o pueden solicitar matricularse en otras escuelas de 4J, siempre y cuando haya puestos disponibles. Announcement for 8th-grade families: Please remember that January 31st is the deadline for in-district students to apply to Eugene International High School through the 4J lottery. Admission to Eugene IHS is open to all students who wish to enroll. All interested students must fill out an online 4J School Choice application at www.4j.lane.edu/choice to be included in the in-district lottery. French or Spanish Immersion students need to submit the Eugene IHS Enrollment Form to the Eugene IHS office at South or Sheldon by the January 31st deadline.

Neurodiversity Affinity Groups Starting in Eugene 4J High Schools

In partnership with The Arc Lane County and a grant from the Oregon Health Authority, The Eugene 4J School District will form affinity groups for students who experience disabilities.
The goal of the affinity groups is to create a safe space for students to connect and invite student allies to promote acceptance and foster friendships.
The Mind Body Divergence Alliance meetings will be held during lunch at on the following days:
- Every Friday starting Jan 6 at Churchill High School group
- Every Monday starting Jan 9 at South Eugene High School
- Every Tuesday starting Jan 10 at Sheldon High School
- Meetings at North Eugene High School are to be determined

Lancer Pageant 3v3 Basketball Tournament
Are you interested in playing basketball and supporting kids in the hospital? The Lancer Pageant is hosting a 3v3 Basketball tournament on Saturday, January 28th. Come to the planters at lunch to sign up to play, a team of up to 5 people is 20$. All proceeds benefit the Children’s Miracle Network.

Career Exploration Opportunities
LEAP Interviews begin Monday, January 23rd
For those seniors who are intending to complete the LEAP through work experience, you will need to complete the LEAP packet of activities and schedule a LEAP interview with Mary Beth or your counselor during the week of January 23rd-January 27th. Use this link https://chscounseling.as.me/LEAP and choose the appointment type “LEAP Interview (30 minutes)”.
For those seniors who are not doing work experience as an option but have already completed an independent option plus the packet, you are welcome to schedule an appointment, also.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)
ASVAB will be given to interested high school students who are at least 16 years old. The test is at no cost to the student and is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15th, 2022 from 1:00 – 3:30 pm, in the STEM conference room. Registered students will be excused from class with a permission slip. Students will need to bring their student computer to take the test. It is recommended that students taking the test have taken math at least through Algebra II, but it is not required. Test preparation materials can be accessed at this link, or in the counseling hallway, or on the table outside the School-to-Career office in the STEM building. Questions? The registration window is open now through January 23rd. Job shadows will take place in February. This is a great, short-term opportunity for all high school students to explore new careers. Find out more here
Summer Internships
Spend time this summer gaining valuable PAID experience working with local companies. High school juniors and seniors can apply for a 200-hour summer internship in the career area of their interest. Application Window: Feb 20 – Mar 30 6-Week paid internship at a local company for High School students in 11th & 12th grade. This makes a super LEAP project for current juniors. Registration information and link will be coming in February.

Pre-College Mentors from the SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) program at UO on our campus!
We are again fortunate to have Pre-College Mentors from the SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) program at UO on our campus. Mentors can work with students in all grades to help them research, explore and plan for life after high school. Mentors help seniors with college, scholarship, and financial aid applications, essay writing, and navigating the system to prepare for their Freshman year in college. Mentors are located in the College & Career Center on a drop-in basis or by appointment. Mentors are available M-F during the following hours:

- Wednesday – 8:30am-3:30pm
- Thursday – 8:30am-3:30pm

Office of Student Access and Completion (OSAC) Scholarship Application
The OSAC Scholarship Application provides current and future Oregon students access to over 600 scholarships through one application. Scholarships can be awarded based on a variety of characteristics including intended major, high school, merit, financial need, and more.
Oregon Promise
This is funding from the State of Oregon that helps students pay tuition at any Oregon Community College. The application is not long, but students must fill out the FAFSA or ORSAA to be considered. We recommend that you fill out the Oregon Promise application even if going to a community college is not your first choice. We don’t want you to miss deadlines! Virtual Movie Screening

Eugene School District 4J is pleased to present a virtual screening of the film LIKE. LIKE breaks down why we find social media so irresistible, examines who is controlling whom, and gives viewers the tools to pivot to a more balanced and contented relationship. It features Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, including the co-creator of the ‘LIKE’ button, experts in brain science, and teenagers.
Medical and science experts explain the behavioral changes that come from chemical effects on the brain. But the 49-minute-long LIKE does not leave you with a sense of fear and foreboding.
The core of the documentary is built around the kids and teens interviewed, and the empathy that they build with their audience as they look honestly at their usage and dependence on these tiny devices, consider the good that can come from and be transmitted via social media and rethink the relationship to one where they are much more aware and in balance.
4J families also have the opportunity to watch the film online. Students are encouraged to watch and have conversations with their parents regarding the topics.
LIKE is the third film in 4J’s four-film series presented this school year to help spur conversations about important social issues faced by today’s youth.

Family and Community Information
Registration is Open for Uplift Events for Students
Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Uplift by Youth Era events. Uplift is a live, trauma-informed, virtual summit for teens (14-19). Participants will join youth from around the world to master their mental health, learn how to support their friends and how to build community. Uplift is 100% virtual and completely free for Oregon high school students thanks to funding through the Oregon Health Authority. The 4-day training happens outside of school hours, typically during school breaks, and requires no demands on teachers’ limited time. Students earn a $75 stipend for participation and chances to win lots of prizes.
