Hello, Churchill families and students;

Happy Friday, and happy three-day weekend!  I hope you are able to take time to relax, spend time with friends and families, and get outside to explore.   We have just finished a fun week full of exciting things here at CHS – 2 hour late start due to weather, singing Valentunes for Valentine’s Day, our first of two spirit weeks, and Bunco tonight (Friday) as a fundraiser for our Lancer Pageant benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network.   Churchill really is a busy, lively, fun place to be!

Next week is another busy week – another Spirit Week, an Assembly on Friday, Spring sports registration is due, the wrap up Winter sports, College and Career visits, and much more.  Read about it all below, or check our CHS Website for more information.

School and Student Information

Spring Sports Registration is due on Wednesday, 2/22!!

Spring sports registrations and physicals are due Wednesday, February 22. All portions of the registration must be complete, including a current sports physical on file. Sports physicals can be turned in at the front office.

Practices for Spring sports start on Monday, Feb. 27th.

Registrations that are not completed in full by the end of the day on February 22 may not be processed in time for practices on the following Monday, February 27.

 

Black Excellence Week

As we roll into a spirit week for Black Excellence week, we wanted to share a few reminders and things to keep in mind:

When choosing to dress up, please ensure that you are not appropriating someone’s culture or painting your skin to match a skin tone.

Cultural appropriation, also called cultural misappropriation, occurs when a person from one culture adopts the fashion, iconography, trends or styles from a culture that’s not their own. Some of the most harmful examples of cultural appropriation occur when the culture being appropriated is one of a historically oppressed group. An example is wearing hair styles like corn rows, afros, and other styles that don’t belong to your cultural community.

Another example is Blackface, which is rooted in racism. Please do not paint your skin to match a skin tone to dress up. Blackface grew in popularity in the U.S. when civil rights were being demanded by recently emancipated slaves. White performers painted their skin darker tones to play characters that demeaned and dehumanized African Americans. Given blackface’s use to historically denigrate people of African descent, its use is still considered racist.

Please be appropriate and respectful as we wrap up a great month of celebrating Black History month and moving into Black Excellence Week.

 

Spirit Week

Next week we have another Spirit Week and activities at lunch for all students to participate in sponsored by our very own BSU and other affinity groups.

  • Monday 2/20 – no school
  • Tuesday 2/21 – Black Super Hero Day (musician, sports player, activist…)
  • Wednesday 2/22 – Black Greek Colors (fraternity and sorority)
    • Freshman = Blue and White
    • Sophomores = Purple and Gold
    • Juniors = Pink and Green
    • Seniors = Crimson and Cream
    • Staff = Black and Gold
  • Thursday 2/23 – Dress to impress – Suited and Booted!
  • Friday 2/24 – Hoods up Day – In honor of Trayvon Martin

 

Black Icon Scavenger Hunt

Some CHS staff are repping movers and shapers of Black History that you may or may not have heard of. Come to the front office to pick up a playing card and try to find the staff that matches your icons. Look for staff with Black Excellence name tags on and keep an eye out for Black Excellence posters near classrooms and office areas for clues. If you find all of your icons, turn in your finished card, with your name and student ID number on it, to Gene Chism in F43 during a free/passing period by 3:00 pm on February 24 to be entered into a raffle for a prize. Good luck!

Pre-College Mentors from the SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) program at UO on our campus!

We are again fortunate to have Pre-College Mentors from the SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) program at UO on our campus. Mentors can work with students in all grades to help them research, explore and plan for life after high school. Mentors help seniors with college, scholarship, and financial aid applications, essay writing, and navigating the system to prepare for their Freshman year in college. Mentors are located in the College & Career Center on a drop-in basis or by appointment. Mentors are available M-F during the following hours:

  • Monday – 9:00am-3:30pm
  • Tuesday – 8:30am-3:30pm
  • Wednesday – 8:30am-3:30pm
  • Thursday – 8:30am-3:30pm
  • Friday – 8:15am-10:00am

 

What are the OSAC Scholarship and Oregon Promise Applications?

Office of Student Access and Completion (OSAC) Scholarship Application

The OSAC Scholarship Application provides current and future Oregon students access to over 600 scholarships through one application. Scholarships can be awarded based on a variety of characteristics including intended major, high school, merit, financial need, and more.

Oregon Promise

This is funding from the State of Oregon that helps students pay tuition at any Oregon Community College. The application is not long, but students must fill out the FAFSA or ORSAA to be considered. We recommend that you fill out the Oregon Promise application even if going to a community college is not your first choice. We don’t want you to miss deadlines! Grad Party Fundraisers

Calling all gardeners, green-thumbs, and produce connoisseurs! We are doing a Seed Fundraiser with proceeds to benefit the Senior Class. All order forms are due to our email, or to the school office, no later than February 28th, 3 pm. We are accepting checks (made out to Churchill Grad Party), cash, or Venmo. Please include your order specifications and your contact information on the order form. This is a great opportunity to get friends and coworkers involved in supporting our senior class. Master and amateur gardeners it’s time to plan your gardening plots and start your seedlings. Spring is almost upon us, so get your seeds ordered and planted soon while also supporting the graduating class of 2023!

We have some pesky red/white/blue flamingos making their debut in people’s yards over the next few months. If you have the name and address of someone you would like “flocked” please email us. Please be advised they should have a good sense of humor and a willingness to support our Senior Class? You’ve Been Flocked! will be in effect from March until June.

In May, we will be selling Mother’s Day 12” Hanging Flower Baskets. More information is forthcoming about that event. Preorder sales and on-site sales will be available.

If you would like to simply donate funds to sponsor a raffle basket, pay for prizes, or sponsor a student’s entry to the event, we would appreciate any assistance. Use the Venmo code, send cash or check to the school office, or contact one of the committee members for donation payment arrangements. We are a non-profit, parent-sponsored event.

High School Summer Exchange Opportunity

Many students hope for a chance to travel and experience the world. Since 2002 (excluding the past 3 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and travel precautions) area high school students have traveled to Jinju, South Korea as Youth Ambassadors to Eugene’s Sister City. Korea combines ultramodern bustle with ancient traditions of great beauty and peace. It is one of the most wired countries in the world, home of K-pop music, and Oregon’s 5th largest trading partner. Youth ambassadors enjoy two weeks in Korea where they develop strong bonds with their host brothers and sisters, represent Mayor Lucy Vinis to Jinju’s city officials, have fun day and night activities, learn traditional dance and martial arts moves, as well as visit castles and temples. After returning home, they unpack and get ready to welcome Jinju’s Youth Ambassadors for their activities in Eugene. In past years we have sent high school youth from Willamette, Sheldon, South Eugene, Springfield, A3, and Marist High Schools.

Come to Hilyard Community Center Tues., Feb. 28th from 6:00-8:00 PM to hear our program leaders and a few former youth delegate travelers tell about the planning and travel experience. A light casual cultural dinner will be provided free of charge.

  • Dates of the exchange: Approximately July 21-Aug. 3, 2023 Eugene students in Jinju and Aug. 3-17, 2023 Jinju students in Eugene.
  • Cost: Airfare (approximately $2,100.), host gifts, and spending money.
  • Perks: Community Service Credits
  • Hosting: Ideally, families of Eugene’s Youth Ambassadors host Jinju’s Youth Ambassadors for 1.5 weeks, but this is not mandatory. Stipends may be available to help with the costs of hosting.
