AAPI Heritage Month

May is AAPI Heritage Month, honoring the contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islanders to our history, society, and culture. Prior to Friday’s AAPI heritage month assembly, we would like to recognize Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans who have uniquely contributed to and influenced U.S. history, culture, and achievements.

Daniel Ken Inouye, Then-Highest Ranking Asian American Politician in U.S. History

Born to Japanese immigrants, Daniel Ken Inouye was a U.S. Senator from Hawaii from 1963 until his death in 2012. He witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor and later overcame discrimination to serve in the U.S. military. He earned his law degree from the George Washington University Law School in 1952. In June 2000, President Bill Clinton awarded him the Medal of Honor. Until Kamala Harris’s inauguration in 2021 as vice president, he was the highest-ranking Asian American politician in U.S. history, third in the presidential line of succession as president pro tempore of the U.S. Senate.

Graduation Tickets

Seniors: Today is the day! Get your graduation tickets today at lunch in the courtyard. You need to be cleared to graduate on the Graduation Checklist. You’ll need to know: How many total tickets you will need, whether any of your guests will need wheelchair seating, and whether any of your guests will need an interpreter. 

Girls Basketball 

Anyone interested in playing girls’ summer basketball, there are workouts next week on Tuesday and Thursday in the gym from 4-5:15, and Monday and Wednesday at Kennedy from 5-6.  Summer season starts Tuesday, May 30th with practice from 4-6.  See Coach Stewart in room H1 if interested or if you have questions.

Work Study

Work Study positions are now open for sophomores and juniors. Work at a Churchill area school next school year, get paid, and get class credit. Students must be at least 16 years old, with a GPA minimum of 2.0, and have very good attendance. Positions are open at Adams, ATA, César Chávez, Churchill, McCornack, and Twin Oaks schools. Interested students can drop off their resumes to Mary Beth in the School-to-Career Office in the STEM building. Applications are due by Wednesday, May 31st.

CHS Spring Musical

The CHS Spring Musical, Seussical, continues with its final showings! Inspired by the works of Dr. Seuss, this musical follows Horton the Elephant, JoJo the Who, and Gertrude McFuzz through their adventures in the Jungle of Nool, Whoville, and beyond. Showings are May 18, 19, 20 at 7 PM and May 21 at 2 PM in the CHS Auditorium. Tickets are $7 for students and $15 for general admission. You can buy tickets from CHS Thespians during lunch, or simply at the door! This is one you cannot miss!

MAPS Scholarship

Seniors!  The due date has been extended for the MAPS Scholarship for first-generation college students. The new deadline is this Wednesday, the 17th! Applications were sent to your 4j email or you can get a copy from your counselor. Be sure to apply for this $1,000 scholarship!

Snacks

For the remainder of the year during the 15-minute break, there are grab-and-go snacks in the cafeteria.  Please stop by the cafeteria, enter your student ID number, and grab some food to help you get through until lunchtime.  Each classroom also has granola packets if you are hungry during other class periods as well.
