Winter Celebrations

Here at Churchill, we want to make sure we are acknowledging and appreciating all cultures and traditions, especially during this time of year. We would like to share some winter celebrations that will be happening over the next few weeks.

Beginning on the evening of December 18th and ending on the evening of December 26th, Hanukkah is the Jewish “festival of lights” that lasts for 8 days. Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting a menorah every night, reciting certain blessings, and eating fried foods.

Originating from the Pagan traditions, the Winter Solstice, on the 21st, marks the end of fall and the beginning of winter and is the shortest day and the longest night of the year! It is celebrated in various ways around the world with feasts and fire or light traditions. The Winter Solstice is recognized in places such as Scandinavia, Japan, China, Iran, and many Indigenous communities such as the Suni and Hopi tribes.
