Black Fact of the Day

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are institutions established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and provide post-secondary education to Black people. In the immediate post-Civil War period when only two predominantly white colleges, Oberlin and Berea, accepted black students, these institutions, founded by African American churches, Southern state governments, and in one instance the federal government, made it possible for African Americans to access higher education. The first HBCUs usually provided a mixture of high school and college training. With the passage of the second Morrill Land Act of 1890 and the U.S. Supreme Court Decision in Plessy v. Ferguson, which established the “separate but equal” doctrine in 1896, most of these institutions were able to concentrate on developing post-secondary curricula.
