Family Bulletin, January 12, 2024

Churchill Families,

Friday we had an amazing Martin Luther King Jr. assembly planned and ran by our Black Student Union.  The student speakers, the songs of freedom shared, the choir singing, and our two guest speakers were all so wonderful!  Thank you to our student body for being so attentive and respectful, thank you to our BSU students and advisor for putting this assembly together, and thank you to our two guest speakers, Dr, Johnny Lake and Guy Okili da Graca.

This weekend we will be getting some ice and possible snow.  Please stay safe, warm, and check the 4J School District website for any delays, cancelations or changes to the weekly schedule.  If all goes well, next week will be an A, B, A, B class rotation with an early release on Wednesday.  If weather causes a change to the schedule, please look for details in an email and 4J’s or our main websites.

As we head into a long weekend, again, I hope you stay safe and warm, and on Monday, I encourage you to remember why we celebrate MLK Day, what he did for our country, the Civil Rights movement, and also maybe give back or do something kind for a neighbor or family member.

Go, Lancers!

Missy Cole, Principal

Become a Churchill Community Responder

A Churchill Community Responder is a volunteer that responds to “alerts” sent by the 15th Night Coordinator for needs specific to CHS students that have not been met by internal school resources. These types of alerts would be for items such as clothing, shoes, small household items, food, or bedding.

A Churchill Community Responder would receive a text message indicating a need. If the Responder can provide the need, they respond to the text message and work with the CHS Coordinator to secure and deliver the item to Churchill High School.

In Eugene School District 4J, every school offers an excellent education for our students. Students may enroll in their neighborhood school at any time or may request to enroll in a different 4J school provided there is space available. School choice requests will be accepted in an order determined by lottery.

To be included in the lottery, 4J residents must submit a request form by January 31 at midnight. Non-district residents must submit a request form between March 1 and 31. All students who want to obtain a transfer must submit a request form, including new incoming siblings and students who have moved out of the district and want to remain enrolled next year.  Not all schools are open to non-district resident requests.

Virtual and in-person school visits are scheduled in January. If you have any friends or family members who are considering school choice, please invite them to learn more about their school choice options!

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is OPEN NOW

The Oregon Student Aid Application (ORSAA) will open later in January

The FAFSA and ORSAA are applications for financial aid. You will either fill out the FAFSA or ORSAA, not both. If the student has a social security number, they fill out the FAFSA. If they don’t, they fill out the ORSAA. If you aren’t sure which to fill out, use the filter tool, HERE. Many colleges and scholarships use the FAFSA or ORSAA data to award their funds too. So even if you think you won’t be eligible for grant money, and you are going to college, fill out the FAFSA or ORSAA!

The US Department of Education has overhauled the FAFSA to an extent we haven’t seen in a decade. It has been a bit of a rough launch, but the Federal Student Aid Center and many community organizations are working hard behind the scenes to resolve problems and provide support. See below for many useful resources.

The State of Oregon updated the ORSAA as well. It is not open yet, but we anticipate that it will be by the end of January.

CHS is here to help! If you need help or support, filling out the FAFSA or ORSAA, please join us for our FAFSA/ORSAA workshop.

WHEN: Tuesday, January 23, 2024. Stop in anytime between 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm.

WHERE: CHS Library Stop in any time between 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm.

WHAT TO KNOW: Oregon Student Access and Completion (OSAC) staff will be on hand to help fill out the form(s) and answer questions. Please create the necessary FSA IDs beforehand (usernames and passwords) and bring a computer and necessary documents.

  1. Learn about the FAFSA, who is required to provide information, and what you will need to gather to fill it out HERE.
  2. The students and most often parent(s) will need a username and password which is known as the FSA ID. You will use the FSA ID to sign the FAFSA electronically. It takes three days for the FSA ID to be processed. To create your FSA IDs, go HERE.

Can’t join us on the 23rd? You are welcome to take part in workshops at other schools in our district.
