Family Bulletin, December 15, 2023

Churchill Families,

Welcome to Winter Break!!!!!  I hope that you and your student(s) are able to rest, relax, and recuperate over these next two weeks as we head into Winter Break and wrap up the year.  It still amazes me that it is December and 2023 will soon be done and the newness of 2024 will be here.  May your time away from school be filled with rest, fun, family, friends, and time to take a beak from school.

When we return to school in the new year, we will have a “C day” on Weds. the 3rd, followed by A and B days.  We will also be heading into the last 4 weeks of first semester.  For those students who are struggling with grades, there is still time to finish assignments, take test, and pass classes.  During break is a great time to finish assignments and submit them to teachers via Canvas. It’s also a great time to clean out backpacks, organize notebooks, and get ready for a reboot in January 2024!

May your break and holidays be wonderful!

Go, Lancers!

Parents of Seniors: LEAP

The Extended Application Experience is an Oregon Department of Education high school graduation requirement. It is a component of Personalized Learning graduation requirements from ODE.

At Churchill, this project is a LEAP — Lancer Extended Application Project. It is an avenue for high school students to connect what they learn in school with their own interests, goals, and future careers. This means that the project they choose should be something they are interested in and that aligns with their goals.

For a more detailed understanding of the requirement and what it means to your senior, please review this 13.5-minute slideshow video at This is the presentation the seniors saw during Advisory.

The goal of the LEAP is for the student to be able to make connections between what they are learning in school and how it applies to the real world, and how education can help them achieve their goals and pursue their post-high school interests. By doing so, they can gain a better understanding of how their education can support their goals and aspirations — no matter which path they choose.

Is your senior new to Churchill this year? If you and your family are new to Churchill from another 4J school or another school district, please have your student see their counselor to check if something on their prior school’s transcript may qualify as a LEAP.

It’s School Choice Time

In Eugene School District 4J, every school offers an excellent education for our students. Students may enroll in their neighborhood school at any time or may request to enroll in a different 4J school provided there is space available. School choice requests will be accepted in an order determined by lottery.

To be included in the lottery, 4J residents must submit a request form by January 31 at midnight. Non-district residents must submit a request form between March 1 and 31. All students who want to obtain a transfer must submit a request form, including new incoming siblings and students who have moved out of the district and want to remain enrolled next year.  Not all schools are open to non-district resident requests.

Virtual and in-person school visits are scheduled in January. If you have any friends or family members who are considering school choice, please invite them to learn more about their school choice options!
